Tectonics are here intended as the realm in which the relations between morphology and internal dynamics are established. The understanding of materials pursued here is that of an abstract materiality, where materials are intended as supersaturated structures, neither undefined nor fully formed, but able to process energies as information.
Shape Generation Process
modularity to subdivision surface
Material behavior infusion
through internal forces and constraints simulation
Computational design can be exploited to infuse behavioral qualities directly in the design medium, thus transcending the limits of one-way parametric control, and incorporating those behaviors as operating procedures that keep the design in an active state, progressively achieving stability through iterative human-software dialog.
Stress pattern simulation
through force and constraints simulation
loads and constraints
stiffness pattern and principal stresses direction
stress intensity field
Heatmaps
from intrinsic shape features - for pattern modulation
Patterned surface
geometric coherent 3D structural ornament
The architectural problem is addressed in terms of intrinsic qualities (directionality patterns, structural coherence, void-enclosure relationship etc.) rather than pre-imposing a specific typology and scale; the fact that the results converged at the scale of pavilion/installation does not undermine the potential intrinsic to the approach.
